Because of the refocusing of ICCC, more than 1,000 experienced men may become available for training. Yet with so many potential candidates, not all of them are called to be pastors.
Recruiting process
Several factors determine whether a man is qualified to be a pastor, all of which are analyzed in the recruiting process, including aspects of spiritual maturity, family status and educational background. The 300in3 partnership takes a detailed approach to find out if each candidate is qualified to be a church-planting pastor.
Screening available candidates
ICCC does the initial screening of all the potential candidates. The opportunity for pastoral training is first announced to the Jesus Film workers, as well as other men who have been discipling in campus and community ministries throughout the nation. These have been school faculty and professionals who have an interest in serving Christ.
Maturity, understanding of salvation, family situations and even academic achievement are all addressed in the screening process. Also, the doctrinal beliefs of every potential candidate are considered. For example, the BFCC is a non-charismatic organization, so people who are not open to instruction as such are recommended to serve the body of Christ as they are led in other ministries.
Interviewing selected candidates
After the initial screening, the Berean Fellowship then sends a delegation to India to interview each candidate, working with leadership from ICCC. The delegates are typically the same men who are visiting India to participate in BILA graduations at other locations.
The extensive and detailed interview process focuses mainly on the requirements outlined in 1 Timothy 3 regarding the conduct of pastors. Such requirements include integrity, righteousness, ability to teach, maturity, a good reputation and strong family leadership, among others. These biblical qualifications are cross-cultural and can be applied to both American and Indian pastors, regardless of ethnicity of language.
Final selection
Trainees are then chosen by the BFCC with much input from ICCC, according to results from the interviews. The recruiting process that includes initial screening, interviewing, accepting and preparation for training generally takes about three months. After the candidates are notified of their acceptance, they are given time to make arrangements for their families (if married), as only the men come to the BILA.
